Our mission and values

At Children Beyond Breakup, our mission is to foster and maintain meaningful connections within families during challenging times through our children contact service. We are committed to providing a child-centered approach, placing the child and their needs first to build relationships between the absent parent/carer and the child. Through professional guidance and dedicated support, including parental mediation services, we strive to empower families to create positive pathways for the future. Our Children Life story work ensures that every individual child's needs and wellbeing are prioritized and central to all the work we undertake, whether it involves Supervised Contact or Supported Contact.

Supervised Contact

Supervised contact is used in situations where parents have separated, trust has diminished, communication is challenging, and alleged safety concerns have been raised. Our children’s contact service is here to protect the physical and emotional well-being of your child(ren), while helping to nurture positive, safe and consistent relationships that always put your child(ren)’s needs first.

During supervised contact, our friendly team will be there to observe and listen while you spend time with your child(ren). We’ll take notes to help create reports that reflect your contact sessions, which we share with both parents and their solicitors or Cafcass when needed, always with your child(ren’s) best interests in mind.

Some activities aren’t suitable during supervised contact, such as bike riding, or swimming. We’ll stay close by so we can listen in and see how things are going between you and your child(ren), whether you’re spending time outdoors or inside. Our aim is always to be supportive, not intrusive.

We also offer a gentle transition from supervised contact to supported contact for those who are ready for it. Our team will only step in if we believe your child’s welfare might be at risk; otherwise, we strive to minimize the impact of supervision to help ensure that your time with your child(ren) is relaxed and enjoyable.

Parental and Parental/child Mediation & Conflict Resolution

When families have disagreements, finding ways to talk things through and work together is really important, especially for their children. Mediation helps families solve problems as a team, making sure parents and carers are the ones making decisions rather than letting a court decide. By using parental mediation services, families can calmly sort out their differences, always keeping their child’s happiness and wellbeing in mind.

Some of the good things about mediation are:

  • Parents and carers can talk together and agree on what’s best for their children, with the help of mediation.
  • Families work together to understand what their children need most and make sure those needs come first.
  • Mediation helps everyone learn to communicate better, which makes co-parenting easier and supports things like Children's Life Story work.
  • Problems can be sorted out faster and with less arguing than if families have to wait for court dates.
  • Families save money and time because they don’t have to deal with long, expensive court cases.

Child Life Story Work – Preparation for child contact with an absent parent

Life story work for children has been around since the early 1980s and helps children prepare for changes in their families, especially when they lose touch with a parent.

Losing contact with a parent can be very hard for a child, but research shows that if it is safe, keeping a positive relationship with both parents is usually best for their wellbeing.

During these sessions, children are encouraged to share their feelings and thoughts about meeting a parent they haven't seen for a while.

This helps them talk about any worries and get ready for meeting their parent, either with support or under supervision.

The goal is to help children feel confident and safe about seeing their parent again.

Additionally, it provides an opportunity for the child to understand the reasons for the parent's absence in a child-friendly, age-appropriate, and factual manner.

Managing Director - Stephen Spooner

With a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and more than 29 years’ experience supporting children and families, I am dedicated to fostering positive family relationships and providing expert guidance. For the past 13 years, I have worked within Children’s Services for the Local Authority, holding an enhanced DBS certificate.

Alongside my work with the Local Authority, I operate a private children’s contact service, offering supervised and supported contact sessions. I also facilitate parental mediation and conflict resolution to help families navigate arrangements for their children. Additionally, I provide life story work for children, assisting them in preparing for contact with absent parents.

My practice is rooted in professionalism and a genuine commitment to strengthening family bonds.
